Multi-alignment
India works with several powers issue by issue instead of joining one camp or abstaining from all. The Quad and the SCO, Washington and Moscow, the Gulf and Israel: convergence where interests meet, not loyalty to a bloc.

The books
The India Way (2020)
HarperCollins India, September 2020. A former diplomat’s case that India should engage many powers at once in a multipolar world and stop hedging its way out of hard choices. Its eight chapters range from the Mahabharata to managing China’s rise. C. Raja Mohan called the Mahabharata lens an important window into Delhi’s thinking. Ashley Tellis found it brilliant and honest but its account of American decline overstated. Sumit Ganguly praised the candour and found the China chapter anodyne.
Why Bharat Matters (2024)
Rupa Publications, 10 January 2024. Why foreign policy matters to the citizen and how India can rise through an unpredictable world of pandemic, war and disrupted supply chains. Its argument is that India matters because it is Bharat. Read widely as a companion to the first book. It reopened the debate on the foreign policy of India’s first decades.
