For years the Indian answer to two numbers was two phones. That answer has expired.
WhatsApp now lets you keep two accounts logged in at the same time on one phone, inside its official app. Android users got it first. This year it reached the iPhone. It was announced in March and has been rolling out widely since June, from version 26.22.76.
No clone app. No WhatsApp Business on one side and WhatsApp on the other just to keep a second number alive. One app, two identities, a tap between them.
How to add the second account
1. Update WhatsApp from the App Store or Play Store.
2. Open Settings. On Android tap the arrow next to your name. On iPhone go to Account. Tap Add account.
3. Verify the second number with its code, exactly as you did the first time. On iPhone you can also scan a QR code to bring in an account that already exists.
4. Switch from the same menu. On iPhone you can also press and hold the You tab.
If you do not see Add account yet, the rollout has not reached your phone. Update again in a few days.
What stays separate
Everything that matters. Each account has its own chats, calls, notifications, privacy settings and profile. A ringtone set on one does not change the other. The account you are not looking at still rings and still notifies, and you can switch straight from the notification to answer.
The limits
Two accounts, not three. You still need a second number, which means a second SIM or an eSIM. And if you remove an account from your main phone, the computers and tablets linked to it are logged out after 14 days, so back up first.
One phone. Two identities. The customer’s 10 pm message no longer lands next to the family group.
What it means for a business
Most small businesses in India run on WhatsApp and most of their owners run it on a personal number. The supplier, the customer and the family group sit in one list. The owner either carries two phones or answers work at dinner.
Now the work number can live on the same phone with its own notifications, which you can silence at night without silencing your family. That is a boundary, and a boundary is the cheapest productivity tool there is.
Two cautions. If your customers need a catalogue, quick replies or labels, those still live in the WhatsApp Business app. And use only the official app: WhatsApp itself warns against the clones and modified versions that promised this for years, because they put your messages at risk.
