12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos (2018)
Random House Canada; Penguin Allen Lane (UK). Twelve rules for living, from standing up straight with your shoulders back to telling the truth. Each chapter mixes psychology, myth and personal story to argue that meaning comes from accepting responsibility. Over 10 million copies sold worldwide by May 2023. David Brooks in The New York Times called its approach harsh but idealistic and a fitting antidote for young men. Pankaj Mishra in The New York Review of Books called it a repackaging of discredited Jungian mysticism. Julian Baggini in the Financial Times found the rules sensible but the elaboration weak.
Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life (2021)
Portfolio (US); Random House Canada; Penguin Press (UK). The companion to 12 Rules for Life. Where the first book warned against chaos, this one warns against too much order: rigidity, tyranny and stagnation. Published on 2 March 2021.
