एलन मस्क Elon Musk

Ideas

Reason from first principles

He starts from what physics allows and builds up from there. At Y Combinator’s AI Startup School in 2025 he traced SpaceX to building rockets from first principles. He tied the same habit to doing useful things. In 2013 he walked TED through his plans for a fully reusable rocket.

Making life multiplanetary

He founded SpaceX to make a self-sustaining human settlement on Mars possible. He argues that life on more than one planet lowers the risk of human extinction. He set out the architecture at the International Astronautical Congress in 2016 and updated it in 2017.

We need a lot of people to become a multiplanet civilization.

Accelerating sustainable energy

Tesla’s first Master Plan in 2006 set out a ladder. Build a costly sports car. Use the profits to build cheaper cars. Then cheaper still. Part Deux in 2016 added solar power and battery storage. Part 3 in 2023 set out the engineering for a fully sustainable global economy.

Humanity will solve sustainable energy.

Rockets that fly again

SpaceX landed its first Falcon 9 booster in 2015. Falcon Heavy flew in 2018 on three Falcon 9 cores. SpaceX says it lifts twice the payload of its nearest rival at a third of the cost. Starship is designed so that both stages land for reuse. If it succeeds it will be the first fully reusable orbital rocket.

Free speech as the law defines it

He calls himself a free speech absolutist and defines free speech by the law. He says people who want less of it should ask governments to pass laws. When he took over Twitter he also told advertisers it could not be a free-for-all.

By ‘free speech’, I simply mean that which matches the law.

AI as an existential risk

He has warned for over a decade that advanced AI could threaten humanity. He gave $10 million to the Future of Life Institute in 2015. He co-founded OpenAI as a safety-minded lab. In 2023 he signed a letter calling for a pause on giant AI experiments. In 2023 he founded xAI.

Sustainable abundance

Master Plan Part IV turns Tesla towards AI in the physical world. It promises to make advanced products affordable and widely available. He told TED in 2022 that the robot would be bigger than the car. He told Walter Isaacson in 2026 that robots can solve America’s national debt.

Our desire to push beyond what is considered achievable will foster the growth needed for truly sustainable abundance.

Linking brains and computers

He co-founded Neuralink in 2016 with $100 million. US regulators approved human trials in September 2023. Noland Arbaugh became the first person to receive the implant. Lex Fridman later interviewed him alongside Musk and the Neuralink team.
