Martins Beach and public access
After buying the property in 2008 he closed the gate on the only road to a beach the public had used for generations. A state appeals court ruled he needed a coastal permit before closing it and the US Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal in 2018. In January 2020 the State Lands Commission and Coastal Commission sued to force public access.
His lawyers frame it as a private property case. They say the state and activists tried to seize private property without compensation. In 2019 an appeals court agreed that earlier fee-based access was by permission and not a public right. He offered to sell an access easement to the state for $30 million which it declined.

Cleantech losses and KiOR
KiOR spent more than $600 million and earned only $2.3 million in revenue before filing for bankruptcy in November 2014. Mississippi had lent it $75 million and later sued Khosla and executives alleging the loan was won by deception. A 60 Minutes report in 2014 framed cleantech as a crash and used KiOR as an example.
Court filings by Khosla and KiOR deny any fraud. In his open letter to CBS he said his cleantech portfolio was profitable and beat the venture average and that most funding came from private sources. He had long said at least half his green bets would fail and that he accepts intelligent failure.

Predictions that AI will end most jobs
He forecasts that AI could do about 80 percent of jobs from around 2030 and that much of the $15 trillion of US labour income will go. Fortune set this beside more measured views such as Deutsche Bank’s estimate of 92 million jobs lost and 170 million created by 2030. Fortune also noted that he has a large financial stake in AI succeeding.
He says the outcome is a political choice and not a technical one. He expects 2030 to 2040 to be chaotic and pushes for universal basic income, a wealth fund and tax reform to share the gains. He says money stops mattering only if politics permits the abundance.

Open versus closed AI
In March 2024 Marc Andreessen accused him publicly of lobbying to ban open source AI.
He argues frontier AI is a national security matter and that open models hand capability to China. He asked whether anyone would open source the Manhattan Project. He calls existential AI risk overblown but flags bio-risk and cyber-risk as real.
