Sensex and Nifty slide for a fourth session as Brent nears $117
Oil and Gulf shipping fears pulled Indian stocks lower through the week. Mid and small caps fell hardest, and Swiggy dropped 16 per cent after its results.
The Sensex closed Friday at 73,123.83, down 125.56 points and its fourth straight fall, and the Nifty 50 at 22,600, according to Business Standard. Over the week the two indices lost about 2 per cent, on Upstox’s weekly figures.
Brent crude rose from about $110 on Monday to a high of $117.45 on Friday after attacks on Gulf shipping and Saudi energy sites raised supply fears.
Smaller companies took the worst of it. Swiggy fell as much as 17 per cent on Friday to a 52-week low after its second-quarter results, Inc42 reported. Its loss narrowed 16 per cent to ₹922 crore and revenue rose 36 per cent to ₹7,571 crore, but losses at Instamart widened and several brokerages cut their targets. Chief executive Sriharsha Majety said food delivery had its highest ever profits and margins.
Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments said he expects stock- and sector-specific moves to dominate. Vatsal Bhuva of LKP Securities called 22,200 a crucial support for the Nifty.
