Ather Energy posts its first quarterly profit as it adds 2.25 lakh units of capacity
The electric scooter maker earned ₹1.26 crore in the September quarter on revenue up 62.9%. Its board approved ₹122 crore to expand the Hosur and AURIC plants.
Ather Energy has crossed into profit. The electric scooter maker reported a consolidated net profit of ₹1.26 crore for the July to September quarter on Monday. A year earlier it lost ₹154 crore. In the June quarter it lost ₹51.1 crore. Revenue from operations rose 62.9% to ₹1,464.2 crore. It sold 93,211 scooters, 42% more than a year ago.
The profit is real but thin. Other income of ₹62.7 crore carried the bottom line. Operating revenue was ₹61.5 crore short of total expenses. The company reported EBITDA of ₹74.2 crore, its second positive quarter in a row, at a margin of 4.9%. Co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta said demand more than doubled year on year despite commodity and supply chain pressure.
The board is betting on that demand. It approved about ₹122 crore to add 2.25 lakh units of annual capacity. Hosur, which ran at 98% utilisation in peak production, adds 75,000 units. The new factory at AURIC in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar adds 1.5 lakh units by the second quarter of FY28. Combined capacity will be about 11.4 lakh scooters a year.
This is the manufacturing engine at work. Scooters are built in Indian plants and sold to the middle of the pyramid. Credit goes to Tarun Mehta and the teams in Hosur and beyond who stayed the course through years of losses. The next step is to make more of the cells and electronics at home and to sell the scooters to the world.
What a founder takes from it: An Indian hardware company that began as a start-up has reached profit at scale. The bottom line still leans on treasury income. The next proof is an operating profit, and capacity that keeps pace with demand.
