Liechtenstein makes its first state visit to India, with TEPA investment on the table
Hereditary Prince Alois held talks with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi and brought a business delegation. The India–EFTA pact behind the visit carries a $100 billion investment goal.
A small country with deep capital has come to India in person. Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein is on his country’s first state visit to India. On Tuesday President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi received him at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He then held delegation-level talks with Modi at Hyderabad House. Hereditary Princess Sophie, a high-level official delegation and a business delegation travelled with him.
The visit rests on a trade pact. Liechtenstein is one of the four EFTA states with Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement came into force on 1 October 2025. EFTA set a goal of $100 billion of investment in India over 15 years and one million direct jobs.
Prince Alois called the pact’s entry into force a significant milestone. He named innovation, advanced manufacturing, financial services, education and technology as areas of cooperation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on him and said the partnership is seeing strong momentum. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was also scheduled to call on him. No agreements were reported by Tuesday afternoon.
This is how trade risk gets spread. India’s export-first path needs partners beyond its largest markets. Patient European capital fits the factories India is building. Credit goes to the negotiators on both sides who closed TEPA and to the diplomats who kept it moving. The measure now is investment that lands and jobs that follow. The pact counts both.
What a founder takes from it: Small economies with deep capital are worth India’s full attention. TEPA turned investment into a written goal. Founders in advanced manufacturing and financial services should treat EFTA capital as a live channel, not a headline.
