Electric cars nearly double in October as fuel stays dear. They are now 7% of new cars
Vahan shows 35,777 registrations against 18,055 a year ago. Electric two-wheelers hit a record too, but their share of the market slipped in the festive rush.
Electric cars have moved from a niche to a line item in India’s car market. Registrations nearly doubled to 35,777 in October from 18,055 a year ago, on Vahan data. That is about 7% of new passenger vehicles against 3.2% last October. January to October adds up to 2,87,453. All of 2025 was 1,76,817.
Tata Motors leads with 14,552 and a 40.7% share. Mahindra follows with 8,472 and 23.7%. JSW MG has 5,877 and 16.4%. VinFast has 2,565 and 7.2%. Maruti Suzuki, the largest carmaker overall, has 1,188, or 3.3%. Electric is now about 84% of JSW MG’s registrations, a fifth of Tata’s and 13% of Mahindra’s. These are registrations, not dispatches, and the count may be revised.
The reports credit fuel prices tied to geopolitical tension, more models across price points and better charging. Brent was near $109 on Monday. A price shock brings a buyer to the showroom. It does not by itself keep the next one coming. Model choice and charging do that, and credit goes to the makers who committed capital to them before demand was certain.
Two-wheelers show the limit. Electric registrations hit a record of about 2.24 lakh, up 48% on the year, with TVS Motor above 60,000. Yet the electric share of two-wheeler sales fell to 9.65% from 11.58% in September, as petrol motorcycles and scooters grew faster in the festive season. India’s mass mobility runs on two wheels. That share is the number to watch in November, when the festive rush ends.
About 93 of every 100 new cars in October were still not electric. The direction is what counts. Every litre not burned eases an oil bill still running at war prices.
What a founder takes from it: Demand has answered. The next constraint is supply: batteries, power electronics, chargers and the clean power behind them. Founders should build that hardware in India and design it for export from day one.
