India’s armed forces get a home-built AI stack as Sarvam signs a five-year MoU
HQ Integrated Defence Staff and Sarvam have agreed a framework for AI projects across the Army, Navy and Air Force. The models will run on sovereign infrastructure with humans in charge of operational decisions.
India’s armed forces have chosen to build their AI layer at home. Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff under the Ministry of Defence signed a memorandum of understanding with Sarvam on 27 October. It sets up a framework for AI projects across the Army, Navy and Air Force. It also covers joint and tri-service organisations under HQ IDS. TimesTech reports the term as five years.
The ministry said the MoU covers AI applications, research, knowledge management, training and decision support. Sarvam says it will design, build and deploy the applications and support them afterwards. The stated focus is decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop. Human oversight stays on operational decisions. The systems will be built in India and run on sovereign infrastructure. Projects, timelines and money were not disclosed.
The work goes to Chanakya, a firewalled Sarvam division for national security, using the company’s Sarvam 105B foundation model. The design choice matters most. The three Services and joint bodies will share the same foundation models, agent infrastructure and geospatial and perception systems. What one Service learns can then reach the others. Inc42 notes this is Sarvam’s first push into defence.
This is the case for sovereign foundation models made concrete. Military data cannot sit on foreign clouds or depend on foreign model access. A shared stack also avoids three Services buying three systems that do not talk to each other. Credit goes to HQ IDS for a tri-service design and to Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar and his team. The test now is delivery: systems fielded, trusted by commanders and maintained for years.
What a founder takes from it: Sovereign AI now has its most demanding customer at home. Founders in defence tech should build to plug into one shared stack, because the three Services intend to share models, agents and perception systems.
