India beat China 5-2 to make it two from two at the Asian Champions Trophy

Sukhjeet Singh and captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice each in Jalandhar. The win came with unconverted penalty corners that Korea will not forgive on Friday.

India beat China 5-2 in Jalandhar on Thursday. It is their second win in two matches at the Asian Champions Trophy, after Tuesday’s 13-0 against Bangladesh. The defending champions now have 18 goals from two games at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium.

Sukhjeet Singh opened the scoring in the 12th minute. China levelled through Yang Peng in the 26th. Captain Harmanpreet Singh restored the lead a minute later. India led 2-1 at the break. Harmanpreet struck again in the 31st minute and Sukhjeet added his second in the 34th. Chen Chongcong pulled one back for China in the 36th. Jugraj Singh closed it in the 47th.

China made this a contest. They scored twice against a side that had conceded nothing in its opener. Credit to them. Credit too to Sukhjeet and Harmanpreet, who carried the scoring, and to Jugraj, who put the match beyond reach.

The scoreline flatters the finishing. Chief coach Craig Fulton said India created many chances but did not take enough of them, and that six or seven penalty corners went unconverted. That is the anubhav to carry into Friday. South Korea are next. Against them a wasted corner is a goal given away.

What a founder takes from it: A win that leaves chances on the table is still a win, but it is also a warning. The coach named the gap himself, in public, on the night. Founders should run their reviews the same way: name the conversion problem while the numbers are good, not after they turn.
