The PM clears a northern bullet train corridor. Delhi to Varanasi in 3.5 hours

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw says the Prime Minister has approved a high-speed line from Delhi through Uttar Pradesh to Patna and Siliguri. Fares, he says, will be well below airfares.

India has a second bullet train corridor on the way. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on 31 October that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the Northern Corridor. He announced it at the flag-off of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Varanasi and New Delhi. It would be Uttar Pradesh’s first high-speed rail service.

The route runs from Delhi through Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Patna to Siliguri. An extension to Guwahati is planned. Vaishnaw gave the times. Delhi to Agra in 59 minutes. Delhi to Lucknow in 2 hours 12 minutes. Delhi to Varanasi in 3 hours 33 minutes. Lucknow to Varanasi in 1 hour 21 minutes. He said fares will be well below air tickets and that high-speed rail is not only for the rich. He said construction will be Make in India, from pillar to girder.

What was not announced matters as much. No length, cost, funding plan or completion date has been published yet. The first line, Mumbai to Ahmedabad, runs 508 km and is still being built. Its first traction substation is nearing completion at Bilimora in Gujarat. Credit to the engineers and welders who have carried that line this far. Their अनुभव Anubhav with land, viaducts and tunnels is the playbook for the north.

The economics is the point. This corridor joins the most populous belt in India. Cut Delhi to Lucknow to about two hours and a factory in Kanpur is a day trip from a buyer in Delhi. Talent in Prayagraj can work with a firm in Noida. Agra, Ayodhya and Varanasi get a faster spine for tourism. Move more people by rail and the airports and expressways breathe.

The test is execution. Publish the project report. Fix the cost and the dates. Build the rolling stock and signalling in India. A high-speed industry that builds for the north can then build for the world.

What a founder takes from it: A two-hour Delhi–Lucknow run redraws the map for hiring, warehousing and sales across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Founders in civil works, steel fabrication, signalling and station services should watch for the detailed project report. The orders follow it.
