Opposition takes the voter roll fight to Ramlila Maidan. Trust in the roll is the stake
The INDIA bloc rallied in Delhi to demand the Chief Election Commissioner’s exit over the revision of voter lists. The BJP called it drama. The Commission says wrongly deleted voters can re-enrol.
The fight over India’s voter lists moved to the street on Sunday. INDIA bloc leaders marched from the Minto Road and Connaught Place junction to Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. Their demand: the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav addressed the rally. The bloc also wants the revision halted and the 2023 law on appointing election commissioners scrapped. On Saturday it held a symbolic public impeachment of Kumar on six charges. Reuters reports the revision has removed more than 130 million names, over 13 crore. The bloc alleges the deletions hit Muslims and other minorities hardest. Gandhi called the purge treason.
The BJP answered with its own marches. Party president Nitin Nabin led one in Rohtak. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led another in Hari Nagar to remember the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, whose anniversary fell on the same day. Health Minister JP Nadda called the rally an “orchestrated drama”. The Election Commission says the revision removes duplicate and ineligible voters. It denies favouring any party and says wrongly deleted voters can re-enrol.
About 10,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed. Traders’ groups warned that the restrictions would cost festive-season business. Protests have run almost daily since late September, after The Indian Express reported that Kumar’s two deputies had raised internal concerns about the revision.
A clean roll and a trusted roll are both national assets. India’s best digital public infrastructure lets citizens check and correct their own records. The electoral roll deserves the same: published deletion data, a reason for each removal and a quick fix for every error.
What a founder takes from it: The voter roll is the base register of the republic. Every deletion should be traceable and every wrongful one reversible in days, not months. A fast, public and simple re-enrolment path will settle more than any rally or rebuttal.
